Greenville South
Carolina
The city is situated in the northwestern part
of the state in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. It is in
the heart of the swiftly growing "I-85" corridor, being 100 miles
southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina, and 150 miles northeast of
Atlanta, Georgia. The city has a population of 60,000 while
Greenville County now has well over 300,000 citizens.
While
the Greenville area at one time was known primarily for its textile
mills, industry has diversified to include the North American
Headquarters of Michelin and the only BMW assembly plant in the
U.S., as well as large manufacturing facilities for Texize, Hitachi,
Digital Electronics, and many other national and international
companies. The city has a large retail community, anchored by three
major shopping malls. Special attractions in the community include
the Peace Center for the Performing Arts and the Greenville Braves,
the Double A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
The area is
served by the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, while
major connecting traffic arteries are Interstate 85, U.S. 29, and
U.S. 25. The costs of living and housing are below the national
average, even with the strong growth the area is experiencing.
Greenville has a mild climate, with average temperatures of 78 in
the summer and 48 in the winter. Rainfall is
moderate.
